Midnight boundary rules control which day type (weekday, weekend, or holiday) applies when a shift keyed against a timesheet crosses midnight. This ensures Rates and Rules correctly interpret whether the shift occurred on a weekday, weekend, or a day flagged with a specific holiday type.
Configure Midnight Boundary Rules
Midnight boundary rules are part of the primary interpretation setup for a pay agreement. Each rule defines how the system decides the applicable day type when a shift spans two calendar dates. You can create multiple midnight boundary rules within a single set of primary interpretation rules, for example:
Different rules for weekdays and weekends.
Rules for specific days of the week (such as Monday or Saturday).
Rules for days where a particular holiday type applies.
A midnight boundary rule is created by defining:
A name that uniquely identifies the rule.
The boundary type.
The shift day types or holiday types to which the rule applies.
π Note: The following conditions apply to midnight boundary rules:
A single midnight boundary rule can apply to shift day types or holiday types, but not both.
You cannot define more than one midnight boundary rule for the same shift day type.
You cannot define more than one midnight boundary rule for the same holiday type.
If a midnight boundary rule exists for a holiday type and another rule exists for the shift day type on which that holiday occurs, the holiday-type rule overrides the day-type rule.
If one primary interpretation header is valid on the shift start date and another on the shift end date, the header that is valid on the shift start date applies to the entire shift, even if the shift is split for day-type determination.
Understand Midnight Boundary Rule Settings
Use these settings when you define a midnight boundary rule:
Setting | Description |
Name | Identifies the midnight boundary rule uniquely within the agreement. |
Boundary type | Defines how the system decides the day type when a shift crosses midnight. Options include using the shift start date, the shift end date, the date on which the majority of the shift hours were worked, or treating the shift as two separate shifts on consecutive dates. |
Shift day types | One or more shift day types (days of the week). If you select a shift day type such as Monday, the midnight boundary rule applies to any shift that starts on a Monday. |
Holiday types | One or more holiday types. Use this if the rule should apply to specific holiday dates rather than particular days of the week. When a holiday type applies to a given day, that day is flagged as a holiday and may be treated differently for pay interpretation. |
